Talby? Why "Talby"?

John Carpenter's DARK STAR

What I do all day long?

I started out studying Physics & Astronomy and received my Ph.D. ('Dr. rer. nat.' to be exact) from Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg for an Astrophysical thesis about high-energy emission from Blazars, i.e. violently variable Quasars.

Since public research is a pretty unprofitable art these days (maybe I should have become a rocket scientist...), I applied for project manager for online publishing at a major scientific publisher. Several other positions followed in journalism and public relataions for research institutes, most notably five years as managing editor for the German edition of 'Sky & Telescope' for Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlag, the publishing company which is highly acclaimed for its German edition of 'Scientifc American'.

That magazine unfortunately was removed from the market in 2008, I now work as a freelance science journalist and publishing consultant, still with a prominent focus on astronomy.

In the early 2000s, it was supposed to serve as a test-bed for advanced programming features. E.g., it makes use of 'Cascading Style Sheets'.

When I have to, I implement Java or JavaScript in pages I code, but due to bandwidth arguments and browser incompliances, I prefer to do without and rather use Perl CGIs or Server-Side-Includes to achieve dynamic effects. First steps using PHP resulted in a SPAM-save coding of e-mail contact possibilities:
